The Women's Center and Southern Illinois University Carbondale received the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration at the October 16, 2006 Illinois Campus Compact 20 Year Anniversary Gala. Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter presented the award to representatives of The Women's Center, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, including a student volunteer for the Center.
The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Award recognizes outstanding partnerships between community programs and colleges or universities. This award is presented to community partners that demonstrate a long-term commitment to civic engagement and service learning fulfillment by students, staff and faculty. Along with the recognition of outstanding work, comes a $15,000 grand prize to be split between both organizations.
''The relationship between SIUC and The Women's Center has been around since our establishment in 1972'', Camille Dorris, former executive director of The Women's Center said. Dorris continued, ''Students, staff and faculty play a multifaceted, vital role in the day to day work that we do. We rely on the resources that SIUC provides us and they rely on the Center to provide necessary services and learning opportunities, making it a win, win situation.''
